Economic Development

Revenue Beyond the Meter

Energy sovereignty isn't just about power—it's about the economic opportunities that come with controlling your energy infrastructure. Once your tribal utility is established, new revenue streams become possible: data center partnerships, EV charging networks, and power sales to outside buyers.

SGE helps tribes structure these opportunities to maximize community benefit while minimizing risk and capital requirements.

Data Centers

The data center industry is hungry for power — and tribal lands offer unique advantages that major operators increasingly recognize.

Why Tribal Lands?

01

Land Availability

Large contiguous parcels increasingly difficult to find elsewhere.

02

Energy Infrastructure

Tribal utilities can provide dedicated power supply without competing priorities.

03

Regulatory Environment

Sovereignty enables streamlined permitting and flexible arrangements.

04

Tax Advantages

Potential benefits for both tribe and operator depending on structure.

The Partnership Model

Most tribal data center arrangements don't involve tribal ownership of the data center itself. Instead, your tribe provides what operators need most: land (through long-term lease), power (through your tribal utility), water and wastewater services, and site infrastructure. This model generates multiple revenue streams without requiring your tribe to operate unfamiliar technology or take on operational risk.

Major technology companies—Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and others—are actively seeking these partnerships. SGE helps structure agreements that protect tribal interests while meeting operator requirements.

EV Charging Infrastructure

The transition to electric vehicles is accelerating, and charging infrastructure represents both a community service and a revenue opportunity for tribal utilities.

Two Markets, Two Approaches

DC Fast Charging
(Level 3)

High-powered stations for travelers needing quick turnaround. Ideal for locations along major corridors, near casinos, or at travel centers. These stations can charge vehicles in 20-30 minutes and command premium pricing.

Destination Charging, Level 2, EV charging infrastructure, tribal lands, community facilities

Destination Charging
(Level 2)

Slower charging for vehicles parked for extended periods. Suited for hotels, casinos, workplaces, and residential areas. Lower equipment costs, but requires longer dwell times.

SGE provides full-scope development: site selection, equipment procurement, installation coordination, funding strategy (including federal grants specifically targeting tribal EV infrastructure), and ongoing operational support.

PowerOfftake

With your own generation assets, excess power becomes a sellable commodity. Your tribal utility can participate in wholesale power markets through several channels.

Market Sales

Sell into Independent System Operator (ISO) markets when spot prices exceed your production costs.

Utility Contracts

Long-term power purchase agreements with neighboring IOUs or cooperatives seeking to meet renewable portfolio standards or capacity requirements.

Tribal-to-Tribal

Supply power to other tribal utilities—building regional energy partnerships that strengthen tribal sovereignty broadly.

Ancillary Services

If you have battery storage or flexible generation, sell grid services like frequency regulation and spinning reserves We help structure offtake agreements that provide revenue certainty while maintaining operational flexibility.
